Pentumas

Pentumas

The region of Pentumas, whose name means "repair under rock" or "shoe and rocky precipices", is located at the eastern limit of the territory of Muros. To the south it is bounded by a lake formation that acts as a linkage with the sector crossed by the Mascari. Here, the slightly bright slopes are known as "Sa Pala Murina", a name derived from their characteristic greyish colour.

Pentumas is a warm and sunny area, almost completely devoid of arboreal vegetation. Its wide bare surfaces are intended for grazing or covered with rare herbaceous and sub-arbustive formations, with few Mediterranean maquis and cyst lande.

The cork (Quercus suber L.)

  • Family: Fagaceae
  • Sardinian name (local variant): Suaru, Suru

The cork is an evergreen tree that can reach 15-20 meters high. Its leaves are similar to those of the loam, but what distinguishes it is the characteristic stem peel. It blooms between April and May and fruits in autumn-winter.

It is a typically Mediterranean species, which grows up to 800 meters of altitude and represents an important element of evergreen spots and forests, especially on silica soils of volcanic origin. In the territory of Muros, however, its presence is limited and is almost exclusively found in the area of Pentumas.

Andesite altered

The site of Pentumas is characterized by the presence of altered andesites, an effusive magmatic rock of intermediate composition. Usually, andesites have a brown-blackish or brownish colouration, a porphyric texture and a massive structure.

In the case of Pentumas, however, the rock was deeply altered, turning into a little coherent sandy. Its main components include plagioclase and biotis, while among the accessories stand out quartz, orneblenda, pyrosseno and glass.
